The Richmount Cordial Company is a venture set up by husband and wife David and Martina Burns and developed after many years of producing Elderflower Cordial for home consumption. Reactions from chefs and friends encouraged them to expand this domestic production to commercial levels and in 2013 they formed the Richmount Cordial Company operating from their premises just outside Carrickboy in Co. Longford.
Having given over a part of their farm land for the growth of elder, David and Martina are able to ensure the elderflowers they use are of the highest quality and fresh, being hand-picked on dry days when the flowers are at their most fragrant. Their refusal to use artificial sweeteners, flavourings, additives, colourings, sulphites or any concentrate guarantees their product is completely natural. Being a natural product, variation in colour of the cordial reflects timing of the elderflower harvest, the earlier flowers producing a lighter coloured cordial than those picked later on in the season.
The elderflower cordial produced by the Richmount Cordial Company is very versatile. Not only can it be diluted and drunk as a refreshing thirst-quencher, it can be added to other drinks such as cocktails, sparkling white wines or gin and vodka. The undiluted cordial also has culinary applications where it can be used as a dessert syrup, added to fruit salads, combined with cream or used in sorbets and baking.
David and Martina have won numerous awards for their cordial in the short time they have been marketing it including: Good Food Ireland Approved Provider; McKennas Guides Best In Ireland 2016 and Irish Food Writers’ Guild Winner 2015.
The Richmount Cordial Company has no intention of resting on their laurels though, they intend introducing other cordials to extend their range in the near future, made, of course, to their already high standards of quality and taste.
